At 13k miles the engine hydrolocked due to icing in the intercooler. Car is a 2014 jetta tdi value edition. They "fixed it" by a vw tsb. Turns out it is a very well known issue. Condensation freezes in the intercooler at low temps (below 25 deg), then melts and is sucked in when you start your car (or try) the next morning.
